Making the Most of a Long Layover in Panama City
Leave the airport and visit the Panama Canal at Miraflores Locks, then head to Casco Viejo for a meal and a walk. You need at least 7 hours between flights to clear customs, transit, and make it back through security safely.
- Clear immigration and secure transport. Once you exit customs at Tocumen International (PTY), head to the official taxi stand or use Uber. Do not take unlicensed cars. A ride to the city center takes 30 to 45 minutes depending on traffic.
- Visit the Miraflores Visitor Center. Go here first to see the canal locks. Check the 'Transit Schedule' online before you leave the airport; if you miss the transit times, the locks are just a quiet waterway.
- Explore Casco Viejo. This is the historic district. Spend 2 hours walking the streets, seeing the plazas, and grabbing a coffee. It is compact and very walkable.
- Return to PTY with a buffer. Leave the city at least 3 hours before your next flight. Panama City traffic on the Corredor Sur can turn a 30-minute drive into a 90-minute nightmare during rush hour (7–9 AM and 4–7 PM).
- Is it safe to leave the airport?
