Making the Most of a Long Layover in Panama City

Leave the airport and visit the Panama Canal at Miraflores Locks, then head to Casco Viejo for a meal and a walk. You need at least 7 hours between flights to clear customs, transit, and make it back through security safely.

  1. Clear immigration and secure transport. Once you exit customs at Tocumen International (PTY), head to the official taxi stand or use Uber. Do not take unlicensed cars. A ride to the city center takes 30 to 45 minutes depending on traffic.
  2. Visit the Miraflores Visitor Center. Go here first to see the canal locks. Check the 'Transit Schedule' online before you leave the airport; if you miss the transit times, the locks are just a quiet waterway.
  3. Explore Casco Viejo. This is the historic district. Spend 2 hours walking the streets, seeing the plazas, and grabbing a coffee. It is compact and very walkable.
  4. Return to PTY with a buffer. Leave the city at least 3 hours before your next flight. Panama City traffic on the Corredor Sur can turn a 30-minute drive into a 90-minute nightmare during rush hour (7–9 AM and 4–7 PM).
