How to get your first U.S. passport

To get your first U.S. passport, you must apply in person at an authorized acceptance facility using Form DS-11. You will need to provide proof of citizenship, a government-issued photo ID, a specific passport photo, and payment for the application fees.

  1. Complete Form DS-11. Fill out the form online using the official State Department website, then print it out. Do not sign the form until you are instructed to do so by the acceptance agent at your appointment.
  2. Gather your evidence. Collect your original proof of U.S. citizenship (usually a certified birth certificate) and a photocopy of that document. Also, bring your valid government-issued ID (like a driver's license) and a photocopy of the front and back of that ID.
  3. Get your passport photo. Take a 2x2 inch photo with a plain white background. You cannot wear glasses in the photo. Many pharmacies and shipping stores offer this service for about $15.
  4. Schedule and attend your appointment. Find a local acceptance facility (often a post office or public library) via the State Department's website. Bring all your documents, your photo, and your payment method to your scheduled appointment.
Can I use my passport application to travel if it hasn't arrived yet?
No. You cannot use your application receipt for international travel. You must be in physical possession of your passport book or card to cross borders.
What if I lose my birth certificate?
You must obtain a certified copy from the vital records office in the state or county where you were born before you can apply for a passport.
Does my ID have to be from the state where I apply?
No. You can use a valid driver's license or state ID from any U.S. state, provided it has a clear photo and your signature.
