Planning Your First Trip to Costa Rica

Focus your first trip on one or two regions—like the Arenal volcano and the Pacific coast—to avoid spending your entire vacation in a car. Rent a 4x4 vehicle to navigate rural roads and prioritize booking your national park tickets online at least two weeks in advance.

  1. Choose your primary hub. Don't try to see the whole country. If you have 7-10 days, pick two hubs. La Fortuna (Arenal) is best for adventure and volcano views, while Manuel Antonio or Santa Teresa are best for beach time and wildlife.
  2. Secure your transport. Public buses are cheap but slow. Renting a 4x4 is essential for flexibility, especially during the rainy season when unpaved roads wash out. Book your rental car as soon as you confirm flights, as inventory is limited.
  3. Book park tickets early. Popular parks like Manuel Antonio and Poás Volcano require entry reservations through the official SINAC website. Walk-up entries are often rejected during high season (December–April).
  4. Map your drive times. Do not rely on map distance. A 50-mile drive can take 3 hours on winding mountain roads. Plan to arrive at your destination before sunset, as road lighting is virtually non-existent.
Is it safe to drink the tap water?
Yes, tap water is safe to drink in most of the country, though sticking to bottled water in very remote areas is a safe precaution.
Do I need to speak Spanish?
It helps, but in tourist hubs, almost everyone speaks excellent English. Learning basic phrases like 'Pura Vida' goes a long way with locals.
