How to Choose the Right Suitcase Size

For trips up to 5 days, use a 21-22 inch carry-on. For 5-10 days, a 24-26 inch checked bag works best. For 10+ days or winter destinations, go with a 28-30 inch suitcase. Your suitcase size depends on trip length, climate, and whether you can do laundry.

  1. Measure your trip in days and climate. Count your trip days including travel days. Add 2 days worth of space if going somewhere cold (bulky clothes) or if you cannot do laundry. A 7-day summer trip needs less space than a 7-day winter trip.
  2. Match days to suitcase size. 1-5 days: 21-22 inch carry-on (40-50 liters). 5-10 days: 24-26 inch checked bag (60-80 liters). 10-14 days: 28 inch suitcase (90-100 liters). 14+ days: 30 inch suitcase (100+ liters) or do laundry and stick with 24-26 inch.
  3. Check airline size limits. Carry-on maximum is usually 22 x 14 x 9 inches (56 x 36 x 23 cm) but budget airlines like Ryanair are stricter at 21.6 x 15.7 x 7.8 inches. Check your specific airline before buying. Checked bag fees kick in at different weights: 50 lbs for US airlines, 23 kg (50.7 lbs) for most international carriers.
  4. Consider your packing style. If you use packing cubes and roll clothes, you can fit more in smaller bags. If you fold everything loosely, size up. If you will buy things and bring them home, leave 20-30% empty space or size up one increment.
  5. Test before you commit. Pack for your next trip in the suitcase before you leave the store or within the return window. If you are cramming things in or sitting on it to close it, you need the next size up. If it is less than 70% full, you can size down.
Should I get a hardshell or softshell suitcase?
Hardshell protects fragile items better and is easier to clean, but softshell has exterior pockets and can squeeze into tight overhead bins. For checked bags, hardshell is better. For carry-ons where you want quick access to documents or snacks, softshell wins.
Do wheels count toward the size limit?
Yes. Airlines measure the entire suitcase including wheels and handles. A 22-inch suitcase means 22 inches from the bottom of the wheels to the top of the handle when extended. Wheels can add 2-3 inches to the base measurement.
Can I use a 28-inch suitcase as a carry-on if it is not full?
No. Carry-on limits are about external dimensions, not weight or how full the bag is. A 28-inch suitcase will always be checked. Maximum carry-on size is 22 inches for most airlines.
How do I know if a suitcase will fit in an overhead bin?
Check that all three dimensions (length, width, depth) are within your airline's limits. The most restrictive dimension is usually depth — 9 inches or less for most airlines. Suitcases marketed as carry-on compliant should work, but always verify against your specific airline.
Should I buy a set or individual suitcases?
Buy individual suitcases in the sizes you will actually use. Most people do not need all three sizes in a set. Start with a 22-inch carry-on. If you find yourself checking bags often, add a 26-inch checked bag. Sets can save $50-100 but you may end up with a size you never use.
