Exploring the Sacred Valley Using Local Public Transport
To explore the Sacred Valley independently, use a combination of 'colectivos' (shared vans) and public buses that run between Cusco, Pisac, Urubamba, and Ollantaytambo. You do not need private tours; simply show up at the designated terminals, pay in cash, and flag down drivers along the main roads.
- Find the right terminal in Cusco. For Pisac, go to the terminal on Calle Puputi. For Urubamba or Ollantaytambo, go to the terminal on Calle Pavitos. These are small lots filled with white vans; look for the signs on the windshields indicating the destination.
- Pay the driver directly. There are no tickets. You pay the driver or their assistant when you arrive at your destination. Have small denominations of Soles ready (5–10 PEN) as they rarely have change for large bills.
- Flagging down transport on the road. If you are moving between towns in the valley, stand on the main road (the 'carretera') and wave your hand. If the van has an empty seat, it will pull over. Confirm the destination with the driver before boarding.
- Navigating the return journey. Colectivos run until about 6:00 PM or 7:00 PM. If you are staying out later, you will need to negotiate a private taxi, which will cost significantly more (roughly 80–100 PEN for a trip back to Cusco).
- Are colectivos safe for solo travelers?
- Yes, they are the standard way locals travel. They are safe and reliable, though they can be cramped and drive quickly.
- Do I need to book transport in advance?
- No. Colectivos operate on a 'leave when full' basis. You will never wait more than 15-20 minutes for a van to fill up.
