Como moverse en colectivos en Playa del Carmen y la Riviera Maya

Colectivos are shared white vans that run along Highway 307 between Playa del Carmen and neighboring towns. You flag them down from the side of the road, pay the driver in cash when you get off, and they drop you at any point along their route.

  1. Find the terminal or a road-side stop. In Playa del Carmen, the main terminal is at Calle 2 Norte between Avenida 15 and 20. If you are outside the city, stand on the highway shoulder where the van can safely pull over. Wave your hand clearly when you see one approaching.
  2. Confirm the destination. As the van slows down, shout your destination (e.g., 'Akumal', 'Tulum', 'Puerto Morelos') to the driver or the passenger standing by the door. They will nod if they are heading that way.
  3. Board and pay. Board and take any available seat. You do not pay upon entry. Wait until you are near your stop, then call out '¡Bajan!' (I'm getting off) to the driver. Pay the driver directly in cash as you exit.
  4. Carry small change. Drivers rarely have large bills. Always carry 20, 50, and 100 peso notes. Do not try to pay a 40-peso fare with a 500-peso bill.
Are colectivos safe?
Yes, they are the primary mode of transport for local workers and are generally safe. Keep your bag on your lap and stay aware of your surroundings.
Can I bring large suitcases?
Avoid it. Colectivos are cramped; only bring what fits on your lap or at your feet.
How often do they run?
They run constantly, every 5-10 minutes, so there is no need for a fixed schedule.
