How to Navigate Petra's Siq Safely
The Siq is Petra's 1.2-kilometer natural entrance canyon with narrow passages, uneven terrain, and horse-drawn carriages. Walk on the left side facing traffic, wear sturdy shoes with ankle support, and allow 20-30 minutes each way. Go early (6-8am) or late afternoon (3-5pm) to avoid midday heat and crowds.
- Enter through the visitor center checkpoint. Show your Jordan Pass or purchased ticket. The Siq entrance is 700 meters past the ticket gate. You can walk or take a horse-drawn carriage for the first section to the Siq entrance (included in ticket, but drivers expect a 5-10 JOD tip).
- Position yourself properly in the canyon. Walk on the LEFT side of the path when entering (facing the Treasury). This puts you away from the carriage traffic flow. The Siq is 3-6 meters wide in most places but narrows to 2 meters in sections. Stay alert for carriages—they cannot stop quickly on downhill sections.
- Watch your footing on ancient paving. The original Nabataean paving stones are smooth and uneven. Avoid the polished center section where carriages run—it's slippery, especially if wet. Step to the rough edges where you have better traction. There are no handrails.
- Pace yourself through the temperature shift. The Siq stays 5-10°C cooler than outside due to shade and canyon winds. You'll warm up again when you exit at the Treasury. The walk is mostly flat with a gentle downward slope entering, upward returning. Take water—there are no facilities inside the Siq itself.
- Look up and around, not just ahead. Stop in the wider sections to see the rock stratification, Nabataean water channels, and carved niches. The Treasury reveal happens suddenly at the final turn—most people miss the carved god blocks just before it because they're rushing.
- Can I ride a horse through the entire Siq?
- No. Horses are only permitted from the visitor center to the Siq entrance (about 700m). Inside the 1.2km Siq itself, only walking or horse-drawn carriages are allowed, and carriages must be pre-arranged and cost 20-40 JOD extra.
- Is the Siq accessible for wheelchairs or strollers?
- Partially. The path is wide enough but the ancient paving stones create a very bumpy, uneven surface. Manual wheelchairs require strong assistance. Some visitors use carriages as an accessibility option. There are no ramps or smooth sections.
- What if it rains while I'm in the Siq?
- Exit immediately. The Siq is a flash flood channel. Petra officials close the entrance if rain is forecast, but storms can develop quickly. If you hear water rushing or see officials gesturing, move to higher ground immediately and follow their instructions. This is rare but serious.
- Can I exit Petra through the Siq after closing time?
- Yes, they allow exit after the 4pm or 6pm closing time, but you must be heading OUT. Security walks through around closing to ensure everyone is leaving. Budget 30 minutes from the Treasury back through the Siq to the exit.
