Skiing Whistler Without Breaking the Bank
To ski Whistler affordably, buy your lift passes at least 7 days in advance online, stay in Creekside or off-mountain accommodation, and prepare your own meals. Avoid peak holiday weeks entirely to keep lodging costs from tripling.
- Buy an Epic Day Pass. Never buy tickets at the window. Purchase an 'Epic Day Pass' online before the season starts. If you plan to ski for more than 4 days, the pass will be significantly cheaper than buying daily lift tickets, sometimes saving you 50% or more.
- Stay outside the Village. Avoid the Whistler Village core. Look for Airbnbs or lodges in Creekside or near bus routes in Whistler Cay. Creekside has its own gondola, is quieter, and usually 20-30% cheaper than the main village.
- Eat smart. The village restaurants are expensive. Grocery shop at the 'Whistler Grocery Store' or 'Nester’s Market' for breakfast and lunch supplies. Pack a thermos and sandwiches to eat on the mountain rather than buying $25 burgers at the lodges.
- Use public transit. Don't rent a car. Take the 'Skylynx' or 'Whistler Shuttle' bus from Vancouver airport. Once in town, the 'Whistler Transit' system is efficient and connects all residential areas to the base of the mountains.
- Is it worth renting a car to get from Vancouver?
- No. Parking in Whistler is expensive (often $20+ per day) and the highway driving can be treacherous in winter. The bus is safer and cheaper.
- When are the cheapest times to go?
- The second week of January and the first two weeks of April are the best times for lower lodging rates.
