How to see Jordan on a budget
Prioritize the Jordan Pass to cover visa fees and entrance to Petra, and use the JETT bus for intercity travel instead of private taxis. Eat at local 'souq' spots rather than tourist restaurants to keep daily costs under $60 USD.
- Buy the Jordan Pass before you arrive. Purchase the 'Jordan Explorer' pass online. It costs 75 JOD ($106 USD) and covers your visa fee (which is 40 JOD) plus entry to Petra and over 40 other sites. This saves you roughly $50 compared to buying them individually.
- Use public transport. Avoid private taxis between cities. Use the JETT bus for fixed-price, reliable transport between Amman, Petra, and Aqaba. Book your seats online at least 48 hours in advance to secure the lower fare.
- Shop at local markets. Buy water, fruit, and snacks at local neighborhood markets (dukkans). Prices in tourist zones can be triple the price found in local districts in Amman.
- Limit your time in the Dead Sea area. The public beach (Amman Beach) charges high entry fees. Instead, travel to Wadi Mujib or stay in a budget guesthouse in Madaba and take a day trip to avoid the luxury resort price hikes.
- Is it cheaper to rent a car?
- Only if you are traveling in a group of 3 or 4 people to split fuel and rental costs. For solo travelers or couples, the JETT bus is significantly cheaper.
- Should I tip in Jordan?
- Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory in budget spots. Rounding up your taxi fare or leaving a small change amount at local eateries is standard practice.
