How to avoid hidden travel costs
Hidden costs often lurk in currency conversion fees, dynamic pricing on transport, and automatic gratuity additions. You can avoid them by using fee-free bank cards, booking local transit in advance, and auditing your final bills for 'service charges' before tipping.
- Use a fee-free credit card. Avoid 'foreign transaction fees' by using a card that charges 0%. These fees are typically 3% per transaction. If your card charges this, you are losing $3 on every $100 you spend.
- Choose local currency at the ATM. When prompted at an ATM or card reader, always choose the local currency, not your home currency. Choosing your home currency triggers 'Dynamic Currency Conversion,' a hidden markup where the merchant sets a terrible exchange rate.
- Audit the service fees. In many countries, service is included in the bill. Look for 'Service Charge,' 'Coperto,' or 'IVA' on your receipt. If these are already included, do not feel obligated to leave an additional 20% tip.
- Factor in 'Last Mile' costs. Budget an extra $15 per day for transport costs that aren't obvious, such as luggage storage lockers, airport shuttle surcharges, or city tourist taxes that are only payable in cash upon hotel check-in.
- Is it better to exchange cash at the airport?
- No. Airport exchange kiosks often have the worst rates and high service fees. Use a local ATM with a debit card that reimburses ATM fees.
- What is a 'tourist tax'?
- Many cities, especially in Europe, charge a nightly 'city tax' or 'tourist tax' per person. This is rarely included in your online booking price and must be paid in cash to your hotel.
