Airport Security Solo for the First Time

Going through airport security alone is straightforward: arrive 2 hours early for domestic flights, have your boarding pass and ID ready, place electronics and liquids in bins, walk through the scanner when directed, and collect your items on the other side. The entire process takes 5-15 minutes in most airports.

  1. Prepare your documents before the line. Have your boarding pass (printed or digital) and government-issued ID out and ready. Put everything else away. If you're fumbling for your ID when you reach the agent, you're doing it wrong.
  2. Watch what others do while you wait. Stand in line and observe. Watch how people ahead of you place items in bins. Notice when they remove shoes. See how they walk through the scanner. You'll know exactly what to do by the time it's your turn.
  3. Place items in bins methodically. Laptop and large electronics in one bin. Shoes, belt, jacket in another. Liquids bag separate if you have one. Your carry-on bag goes directly on the belt. Take your time. No one behind you is timing you.
  4. Walk through when directed. The TSA agent will tell you when to go. Step into the scanner, raise your arms if it's a full-body scanner, stand still for 3 seconds, walk out the other side. If it beeps, they'll do a quick pat-down of that area.
  5. Collect everything before you move on. Grab your bins and carry-on and step to the side bench. Put your shoes back on. Repack your laptop. Check that you have everything. Then walk to your gate. You're through.
What if I get pulled aside for extra screening?
Stay calm. It's random. They'll swab your hands or bag for explosive residue, possibly do a pat-down, and you'll be on your way in 3-5 minutes. Just means you're a few minutes later to your gate.
Can I ask the TSA agent questions?
Yes. They've seen every question. If you're unsure whether something can go through, ask before you put it in a bin. They'd rather answer than pull your bag for inspection.
What if I forget to take my laptop out?
They'll pull your bag, open it, see the laptop, and send it back through. You'll wait 2-3 extra minutes. Not a crisis. They see this twenty times a day.
Do I have to take my shoes off?
In the US, yes, unless you have TSA PreCheck. In most other countries, no. When in doubt, watch what others are doing in your line.
What happens if I panic in the scanner?
Tell the agent you're nervous. They'll walk you through it or offer a pat-down instead. Millions of people go through every day. You won't be the first anxious traveler they've seen.
